El Salvador Has Started Volcano-Powered Bitcoin Mining

The president of El Salvador has announced on Twitter that the Central American Country has started mining its first bitcoins, delivering on his promise to use geothermal energy from a volcano to mine the cryptocurrency.

This follows a series of tweets announcing the imminent project:

While China has recently outlawed Bitcoin mining due to power shortages and a general crackdown on all cryptocurrencies, El salvador joins the ranks of several other countries that have embraced Bitcoin mining as a geopolitical startegy. Other countries that have started mining as a state policy or have announced their intention to do so include Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Iran and Belarus.
